SPECIALS LEAD GUITARIST BLAZES TRAILS ACROSS THE US DURING 21-DATE SPRING TOUR
Roddy Radiation, former lead guitarist of the legendary British ska band The Specials, is embarking on his first solo tour through the Eastern United States, April 23 through May 16. Backing him will be the Baltimore/DC ska/rocksteady crew The Scotch Bonnets.
"I'm really looking forward to playing the East Coast and Texas! I haven't played a lot of those places we are doing since the mid-90s with The Specials," said Roddy from his home in England. "I have friends from Chicago to Florida so I'm hoping to see some familiar faces again."
The Specials pioneered the ska revivial craze of the late 1970s by combining the danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude. Roddy wrote numerous Specials classics such as "Concrete Jungle", "Hey Little Rich Girl", and "Rat Race", which helped create the 2 Tone sound. Roddy has also played in rockabilly bands since his youth, such as The Tearjerkers and The Bonediggers. Currently, he leads The Skabilly Rebels, a band that forges a new sound by mixing ska rhythms with rockabilly guitars.
Roddy hooked up with the Bonnets when singer/guitarist Lady Hatchet was attending a Specials' show in April 2010 and flicked a guitar pick at him from the front row that hit his guitar! The two became friends through MySpace and then Facebook, meeting in person at South by Southwest in 2013. Somewhere in their lively conversation the idea of doing a tour together was hatched. "The Specials' sound, their live energy, diversity and political philosophy are all things that have inspired my own music, as well as the way I think," admits Hatchet. "I'm excited to get to play with, learn from, and be around someone with whom I have such tremendous respect." The Scotch Bonnets, who will also be playing an opening set of their own brand of good-love ska, rocksteady, and reggae, will be promoting Quest, their new EP done in collaboration with HR, singer of Bad Brains, available now. The Scotch Bonnets will also be featured on Hellcat Records' new compilation, Hooligans United, a tribute to Rancid, due out April 14.
